Black is a first-person shooter video game, developed by Criterion Games and published by Electronic Arts. It was released on 24 February 2006 for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox video game consoles. The game is notable for its heavily stylized cinema-inspired action as well as its award winning sound quality and focus on destructive effects during gameplay.
The gameplay is essentially a straight forward first person shooter. Players can only carry two weapons at a time; therefore, strategy is needed when choosing weaponry, with weapons differing in characteristics. The player can also carry grenades, which can be thrown without switching weapons. Land mines and grenades can be detonated prematurely by shooting them.
The game is mission-based, with each mission separated by a cut scene video. On harder difficulties, there are more objectives that must be completed before the player can progress. These extra objectives involved collecting various intelligence documents, blueprints, or destroying parts of the environment. These are all indicated by the HUD cross-hair changing color when the player points at the relevant object.
Successful completion of the objectives over all missions in all difficulties above ‘Easy’ results in the awarding of Silver Weapons (infinite bullets) and unlocking the M16-A2 (40mm underslung grenade launcher attachment) as the starting default weapon with infinite 40mm grenades. When unlocked, these features are permanent and cannot be removed without starting a fresh storyline.

  • I love this game and it’s by far one of the scariest game I’ve ever played, you hardly have any allies (looking at you Medal Of Honor) but the thing is. The environment is mostly dead silent. And I got so scared the fact all of the cover and buildings were being destroyed as I came running away under fire. Graphics were so god damn good even at the PS2 almost basically comparing to PS3 beating it. although it doesn’t seems the same as your gameplay which I assume you play on a Emulator according to the Comment Section.

    I want to keep continuing to playing the game but you know, disc quality is bad and you PS2 won’t let you play it for too long and I’ve gotten a lot of bugs from it such as freezing cutscene or a freezing loading screen. Sad I never fully experience the game but it made my childhood and that’s my 1st Modern FPS Game.

    Your also forgetting that BLACK was playstation 2's amswer to HALO. It WAS ps2 first REAL FP SHOOTER. Call of duty really doesnt count

  • Kind of sad that you got the PS2 version because I remember the Xbox version having a lot more detail on the guns when you would reload where it would focus in on your gun to show a pretty nice for the time texture going through really nice animation

  • What struck me most about this game was that you couldn't do two actions at once: detach the silencer and reload, but you could crouch and reload, yet also not detach the silencer and reload at the same time.

  • I noticed that only playstation 2 fans liked this game maybe because they never got a real fps to play on their system
    the xbox version wich is objectively better with smotther framerate and textures and AA is largely ignored by the media and the fans

  • the game looks way prettier on ps2, the background blur when reloading doesn't work on the emulator and the skyboxes aren't loaded as well which heavily affects the looks of the game

  • I know this a late comment but for someone who claims to review games, your very on sided with most games and you seem to use the phrase I didn't do it cuz I wasn't goin to bother with it. Just hating on games cuz you didn't like it or cuz you're bad at the game doesn't make a review. Not to mention skipping aspects of a game because you couldn't bother to do it or couldn't manage doing it does not make a review. Maybe change your titles to cynical douche bag hates on games just to be edgy ?

  • Enemies only take around 3 bullets to kill if you pause after each shot. They have a moment of invulnerability after each hit. Odd for enemies to have that, but was pretty obvious to me. I loved this game.
    Also, the aiming reticule changed color to indicate if you were aiming at friend (green), for (red), or explicable object (black).

  • This game ugly is as fuck. Also, on the PS2 version at least, you keep glitching through the environment or having other collision glitches. It really hindered my ability to play the game as seen in my playthrough.

  • Great game, worst ending ever. Am I wrong?? SPOILERS: (for all 2 people who haven't beat it):
    You get into yet another generic gun battle in yet another generic room (with nothing to make it special other than a few more enemies than usual). You kill everyone and throw grenades at a couple destructable bunkers; just like in any other area from any other map. You pass the destroyed bunkers and come up to a generic door, expecting to move to the next area or fight a boss or something, but instead the game just abruptly ends. That's it. There's no differentiation between this and 100s of similar battles throughout the game; nothing to let you know this is the end. Or maybe I was just too stupid; I mean I knew from how long I'd been playing it had to end soon, but I wasn't expecting it to come out of nowhere. Anyway you open the door and there's a short throwaway cinematic that basically says too bad, the enemy leader escaped, this was all for nothing (IIRC anyway, it's been a few years), and the credits roll. To me it felt like they just ran out of time or money and decided to shoehorn the awkward, sudden ending into the midst of the map. There's no boss battle, no sense of accomplishment, no indication this is the final fight… one minute you're playing along and next minute it just ends.

    I'm assuming they pulled this halfass cliffhanger to set things up for a sequel, but my god, what a poorly done disappointment after how awesome the rest of the game was.

  • I think your slowdowns are based on the original game. I played this on a PS2 yesterday, and during some big shoot outs, the frames dropped and it was very noticable and annoying

  • I remember getting part of the way though the game, say 4 missions in, and having it cease working on the same mission at roughly the same point again and again as if there rest of the game wasn’t written yet or wasn’t available on the disc. Real pain in the arse stuff. And the baddies absorbed way too much ammo.

  • Playing this game on xbox with a custom soundtrack on the system was one of the greatest things ever. Having Ave Maria from the cowboy bebop soundtrack playing in the background while you're destroying everything was epic. And I also like how some of the gun sound effects were taken from some classic action movies.

  • I love that you complained about having big number of smart enemies and you wanted more corridors, says more about the player

  • I didnt like how all the enemies are robots I mean I don't think humans bleed oil like the enemies seem to do in this game like seriously I never could figure out why that black puff of oil came out when ever I shot someone if they are going to add a blood effect instead of the usual sparks from enemies from non bloody games they might as well have just used red blood.

  • Played it on the Xbox One lately and it looks better than on this video ^^ at least i felt so XD

  • I wish this game was ported to the PC. They really could've made the textures and particles pop and make the game really shine. Plus the mouse/kb controls would make the game play a lot smoother as apposed to the clunky PS2 controller. Ah well…

    That's… actualy what I also thought when I first time saw the trailer for this game from my Need For Speed Most Wanted (2005) game disc on PS2 and that was like many years ago.

  • This is one of the best FPS ever…I played this game for days and days…it was and still is one of the best ever, gameplay, graphics, music and history all great!!!
